FF 017: Phonte & Zo!
September 22, 2008 09:49 AM PDT
This past summer, Phonte of Little Brother linked up with DC producer/keyboardist Zo! for a memorable project - an 80's cover album with a collection of refreshing re-works. Fresh off performing with his partner Big Pooh as Little Brother in North Carolina, Phonte made a flight to DC for two reasons: he's performing with Zo! at Bus Boys & Poets, plus he made a stop into our studio to discuss a wide range of topics. FF 016: Southeast Slim

Ah! And you thought we couldn't bring you more fire after the season premiere! I invited a friend of mine, Southeast Slim, to join us in-studio for a very special interview. He also brought two members of his EMP crew; the homies Eihts and C. We chopped it up for almost an hour on all types of topics, including, (yup, you guessed it), what it's like to be super-independent in Washington, DC. Enjoy the episode, and look out for Slim's "boom" freestyle at the end. Boom, indeed. FF 015: X.O.

The season premiere of Funkadelic Freestyles featured DC rapper X.O., along with his team of artists, getting absolutely wild in the studio. We talked about what it means to truly represent Washington, DC and the surrounding areas, plus we spent almost 14 full minutes working the cipher - the most extraordinary display of such on FF so far. FF 001: Muhsinah

The post-Great White Mark era began with an incredibly unique musician from Washington, DC who has worked with artists like Little Brother, Hezekiah, and DJ Roddy Rod. Recorded on the first Tuesday back from winter break, this episode features exclusive unreleased Muhsinah beats, a little insight as to whom she was working with at the time, and my slip-up regarding her religion (d'oh!). Clocks in at about 34 minutes. FF: Zo!

Let me tell you something about Washington DC producer and musician Zo!: he's most likely the most talented cat you've never heard of. You're in luck, though; last December we spent nearly 45 minutes with the man responsible for the most extravagant song off the recent Little Brother album, among other independent projects. He's on the rise, so click download and get associated KNOW. (This was The Great White Mark's final show.) FF SE: Phonte of Little Brother

Emcee and singer Phonte of the hip-hop group Little Brother called into a special edition of Funkadelic Freestyles a few days before the crew was scheduled to hit DC for a show with Evidence and Reef The Lost Cauze. This one is my first interview by myself, and while I may have been a bit loopy that day, Phonte showed love and kept us up-to-date. FF: Wale

Right before Wale stepped out onto the national stage and garnered an incredible amount of attention and appreciation, we welcomed him into our studio in DC on a Friday night in September of last year. This is one of only two interviews that was conducted primarily by The Great White Mark, former co-host of Funkadelic Freestyles. Enjoy the interview, and enjoy the exclusive freestyle Wale spits at the end. |
